Willard Scott was born in Alexandria, Virginia on the 7th March 1934. His childhood and parents are not well-known. He attended George Washington High School to study. He then studied at American University, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Religion.

Scott was an NBC page at WRC AM, a NBC-owned radio station. He became interested in broadcasting during his time as an NBC page. He even worked at the American University’s radio station, WAMU-AM for two years from 1951 to 1953. In 1955, he teamed up with his fellow University friend, Ed Walker, and started co-hosting NBC’s radio program “Joy Boys”.
Willard’s TV show hosting skills were expanded in the 1960s. He was hosting the children’s TV programs while continuing his work on the radio. Scott was a WRC-TV employee and played characters such as Commander Retro and Bozo the Clown. Later, he became a WRC-TV weekday weatherman.
Scott portrayed the clown character of Ronald McDonald for the McDonald’s franchise in 1971. He had written in his book titled “The Joy Living” that he has actually created the character of Ronald McDonald after he was requested by the local franchise.
In 1980, he started serving as a weatherman for NBC’s TV show “The Today Show”, where he replaced Bob Ryan. He retired after more than a decade of service, but he still appeared on the morning show two days per week. Al Roker was his replacement for him as weather presenter on The Weather Channel in 2008.

Scott wed Paris Keena for a second marriage on April 1, 2014. He first met Paris in 1977 while working for WRC-TV. Scott had been with Paris since 2003. However, they were officially married in 2014. They lived on Sanibel Island in Florida.
Al Roker, Al Roker’s successor on the morning news broadcast, confirmed Willard’s passing on September 4, 2023. Roker reported that Scott had passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, surrounded by his family.
