Silvio Scaglia, a Swiss citizen, was born in Lucerne on 14 October 1958. His parents and early life are not known. Concerning his studies, he attended the Polytechnic University of Turin and graduated in 1983 in Electrical Engineering.
After graduating, he began working for Alenia Aeronautica, an Italian aerospace company. He worked briefly on the Tethered Satellite Project. The project was carried out in partnership with NASA and Martin Marietta. His next job was as a programmer for Andersen Consulting.
