- In her teen years, her dad became very ill, then went bankrupt. She was brought to Mumbai by her parents. Her family claims that she is the most beautiful and talented of her siblings. They believe she can find work in Hindi film productions to feed her family.

- She then did cameo roles in many Hindi films like ‘Chand’ (1944), ‘Jugnu’ (1947), and ‘Doli’ (1947).

- She came into the limelight with the 1948 film ‘Pugree’ which was produced by Prem Narayan Arora.
- She acted in more than 100 films including ‘Chacha Chowdhury’ (1953), ‘Sangam’ (1954), ‘Phool Aur Patthar’ (1966), ‘Anokha Bandhan’ (1982), and ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ (2004).
- She married Om Prakash Saidal in her 20s. But soon there were problems with their marriage. She decided one day to divorce her husband, her two daughters and elope abroad with her boyfriend. Because her boyfriend tortured her physically and mentally, she chose to go back to India. She said in an interview that she was:
Yes, destiny wasn’t done with playing me a bad hand. When the children went to boarding, differences between me and my husband grew. That’s when in a misguided moment straight out of my film Gumrah, I eloped with another man abroad, leaving behind my husband, kids and career. That was the worst mistake I made in my entire life. for for which I was very sorry. I was humiliated, tortured. for It was days before I got back to normal. For days, I roamed the streets like a madwoman, sleeping on pavements, eating what I could lay my hands on, touring ashrams and temples in search of peace.” [10]DNA India
- At that time, she was depressed and decided to stay in Calcutta where she joined Mother Teresa’s organisation. In an interview she spoke out about this.
True release was when I met Mother Teresa of Calcutta. for nine years in her various homes, cleaning latrines, sweeping floors and wards, loving leprosy patients, cuddling orphans and staying by the deathbed of many.”
