Watkins, a Fort Myers native, was born June 14, 1993. He attended South Fort Myers High School where he was a letterman in football, basketball, and track & field. He had 33 receptions, 537 yards and 10 touchdowns in his sophomore year. His junior and senior seasons saw him being a first team all-state selection.
Rivals.com considered Watkins to be a five-star recruit. Watkins was offered scholarships from Florida State, Florida State and Miami. He chose to go to Clemson University.
Clemson University freshman, Clemson’s first year saw him catch 82 passes for 1,219 yard and 12 touchdowns. He set 11 school records including the total all-purpose yardage previously owned by C. J. Spiller. The Football Writers Association of America named him a Freshman-All-American.
His sophomore year, he was a part of 10 games and recorded 57 receptions for 708 yard and three touchdowns. In his junior season, he played in 13 of the thirteen games. He had 101 receiving yards for 1,464 and 12 touchdowns. In 2014, he declared that he would skip his senior year to go into the NFL Draft.
The Buffalo Bills drafted Sammy Watkins in the first round 2014 NFL Draft. The four-year deal he signed was worth $19.94million, which included a bonus of $12.28 million. He broke all previous records by setting new receiving yard and reception records with 65 and 982, respectively.
