Melvin was raised in Chicago and received his B.A. He was a student of literature at Ohio Wesleyan University. Melvin decided to pursue his studies and serve in the Air Force because of the current situation the U.S was in.

Melvin was in the Air Force for nearly 4 years. After that, he began to work as a gripman with cable car companies. However, Melvin was also a writer and creator within himself. Melvin wrote in his book The Big Heart about the experiences he had working as a gripman.
Melvin met a fellow passenger while he was going to a meeting. He suggested that he start a filmmaking business. Melvin contemplated the idea and realized that he was interested in creating films.
This is why Melvin decided that he was going to create his first short film which was titled Pickup Men for Herrick which was released in 1957. Melvin went on to make two short films that were the same as his first.
He was beginning to gain insights into the industry and how to best position himself for success. This led him to Hollywood, where he set his goal to become a director. However, this plan didn’t work out as he wanted it to be.
Melvin decided to move his family to Holland after he realized that astronomy was something he wanted to pursue. While on his European travels, Melvin would come across Amos Vogel, who was the owner of Cinema 16. After talking with him, Melvin’s two short films were placed in his catalog of rentals.
Melvin would see this as an opportunity, and he began to work on a French-based short film called Les Cinq Cent Balles. He also began to report for France Observateur and got more work in France as a writer.
Critically acclaimed, the film brought up the issue of racism in America at that time. He then worked on releasing the film called Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song which was released in 1971 which he made through both his savings as well as taking a $50,000 loan.
Melvin took a big risk, but the film would be a huge success. It grossed more than $10M. This was a huge achievement at the time, and Melvin was able to prove himself to be a skilled filmmaker.
Maria Marx was Melvin’s bride. For a period of their lives, they lived in Mexico where their son Mario Van Peebles was born who followed in his father’s footsteps and became a director himself. However, the marriage between Melvin and Maria didn’t last and so they decided to get divorced.
Melvin Van Peebles, 89, died at his Manhattan home on September 21, 2023. Mario, his son, survives him.
