J.R. Smith was born in Clarksburg, New Jersey. As a child, he would attend different high schools. His first was Steinert High. Later, he attended McCorristin Catholic High School but would later transfer to Lakewood High.
He had two successful seasons playing for them but would again make another transfer, this time to Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School. He played basketball, baseball, and football in high school. He decided to focus his career on basketball and he did so.
Smith was thinking of joining college but after he became the co-MVP during the 2004 McDonald’s All-American Game, he decided to be part of the 2004 NBA draft.
