Kameny was born May 21, 1925 in New York City, to Ashkenazi Jewish parents. He went to Queens College and Richmond Hill High School, where he studied physics. Before completing his studies, he was drafted into service in the US Army. He served in World War II in the Army and then returned to Queens College, where he received his final degree in 1948.
Kameny then enrolled at Harvard University where he did both master’s degree and doctorate in astronomy.

Kameny, who was an excellent astronomer, became an Army Map Service astronomer in 1957. After refusing to talk about his sexual orientation, Kameny was fired just a few weeks later.

Kameny was a leader in organizing some of the protests for gay rights that took place in the US during the 1970s. During that period, he challenged the American Psychiatric Association’s classification of homosexuality as a mental disorder. The ban on LGBTQ employees was finally lifted by the Civil Service Commission in 1975.
His activism has led to a massive change in the USA’s equal rights policies. In 2009, Kameny was offered an apology by the US government for his dismissal from the military. Obama personally thanked Kameny for his service to the LGBTQ community.
Kameny is also an elected official. In 1971, Kameny became the first openly homosexual candidate for the US Congress. He ran in the District of Columbia’s first election for a non-voting Congressional delegate. But he was defeated in the election by Walter E. Fauntroy.
Kameny was a victim of heart disease but he still managed to make public appearances. On September 30, 2011, Kameny gave his last speech to an LGBTQ group in Washington, D.C.
On October 11, 2011, he was discovered dead in his house. His death was caused by arteriosclerotic heart disease.
