Edwards was born in Avoyelles Parish (La.) on August 7, 1927. As a young man, Edwards dreamed of becoming a preacher and would even preach at the Church of the Nazarene. He served in World War 2 with the U.S. Navy Air Corps. Edwards returned from the war and graduated from Louisiana State University Law Center. He then began a legal career.

Edwards entered politics through an election to the Crowley City Council in 1954. He decided to join the Democratic Party. After many years of involvement, Edwards won the 1964 Louisiana State Senate election beating Bill Cleveland. This was considered a significant upset at the time. He served for two years as a floor leader after which he would be elected to the United States House of Representatives representing Louisiana’s 7th congressional district.
Edwards served in this role from 1965 until 1972. Edwards was elected Governor of Louisiana in 1965 and served two terms. Edwards was well-known for his colorful politics and his ability to make the crowd laugh. His popularity as a governor increased over the years.
Edwards was elected governor for two more terms, the third beginning in 1984. His career was tainted by corruption scandals.
In 1997, Edwards and a former congressman were captured in a videotape in which Edwards gave $20,000 in cash to the congressman. The situation would only get worse as he was first convicted of taking $845,000 form an entrepreneur who requested to locate a La Salle Parish juvenile prison.
Edwards was convicted on 26 counts. He was found guilty of 17 of these charges and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. Edwards was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment. He was released on July 6, 2011.
Edwards married Elaine Schwartzenburg, his first wife in 1949. Together they had four children. After Edwards’ appointment, she served as an interim U.S. Senator. After 40 years of marriage, they would finally end their relationship in 1989.
In 1994, he was married to Candy Picou. Edwards’s imprisonment had a negative impact on their relationship, and they eventually divorced in 2004. His third marriage would be the most publicized one as he married Trina Grimes who was close to 50 years younger than him and together even appeared in the reality show called The Governor’s Wife.
Edwards, 93, died July 12, 2023 from respiratory complications.
